ca. 1414 - 'Gilles d'Oignier (+1414) and Jeanne de Duvy', Eglise Sainte-Maure-et-Sainte-Brigide, Nogent-sur-Oise, dep. Oise, France
Gilles d’Oignier wears straightforward, plain full plate armour, typical of the earlier 15th century.
The breastplate is covered by a loose-fitting sleeved heraldic surcoat (showing the arms of two chevrons and a bend with escallops), instead of the earlier tight-fitting jupon. A mail standard (collar), with a scalloped edge protects his neck.
Gilles sports the early bowl crop hairstyle which became fashionable at the very beginning of the 15th century.
Note the dagger (misericorde), fastened by a lace, protruding from under a split of the surcoat on his right. The outline of the sword hilt on the left is very weathered, but can still be seen.
The hands and faces of the couple are inlaid with marble, as the bend with the escallops on the surcoat used to be.
Also note the extensive gothic decoration above the deceased.
Unfortunately I wasn’t able to find more information on Gilles d’Oignier and Jeanne de Duvy. Luckily 1414, the year when Gilles died, can be read on the inscription.
