Bradford on Tone - St Giles - C14th knight effigy
Set into a 4-centred arch niche in the southern wall of the nave of ST1722 : Bradford on Tone - Parish church of St Giles is this recumbent effigy of a mid C14th knight, it is thought that it is possibly the figure of Sir John de Meriet who died in 1391.

The effigy of Sir John de Merriet, Lord of the Manor and Patron of the Church from 1350–1391, shown as a knight in armour, had its elbow cut away to make room for the pews during the renovation

One of the lords of the manor, Sir John de Merit (died 1391) founded a chantry chapel here in 1387. The effigy in the south wall is believed to be his.

John (Meriet) de Meriet (abt. 1346 - 1391)

John (Meriet) de Meriet (abt. 1328 - 1369)
He married 1st (1345 or earlier) Eleanor Beauchamp (father: John de Beauchamp, 2nd or 3rd Baron Beauchamp of Hacche, Somerset). Issue: John (b. spg. 1346).
He married 2nd (May 1362 or earlier) Maud. Issue: George de Meriet
He died at Calais on 2 October 1369. His heir was his son John.
His widow Maud remarried Thomas de Bokeland. She died on 11 March 1398.
