Layers of protective armour serve this soldier. The top layer, which protects his chest appears to be mmade of leather. Beneath that is a covering with attached metal plates and on his legs full armour.
He wears gloves which appear at this time and are much sought after.
The shield is an unusual face shape.

Crucifixion avec sainte Barbe et sainte Catherine (Retable des Tanneurs), vers 1420, Anonyme, (Bruges, cathedrale Saint-Sauveur). Ce retable figure parmi les plus anciennes peintures conservees a Bruges, est un remarquable exemple de la production artistique des villes flamandes de l'epoque, a laquelle collaboraient des artistes comme Broerderlam, qui allerent par la suite offrir leurs services aux cours princieres.

such work, from around 1400, is the Crucifixion with Saint Catherine and Saint Barbara, also known as the 'Tanners' Crucifixion', because it probably once belonged to the Bruges tanners' guild. It is one of the very few well-preserved examples of local Flemish painting in the Gothic International Style
